75 years of Vegas gambling

This weekend sees the 75th anniversary of the historic decision to legalise gambling in the State of Nevada. The law was passed during the great depression with the hope that legal gaming would boost the economy. Within 2 years Vegas had put $69,000 in the State's wallet. By the mid 1950s that wallet was bulging with $100million and several new wallets were required by 2002 when revenue topped $10billion. Currently, gaming-tax revenue accounts for 43% of Nevada's general fund.

If you're planning a trip to Las Vegas to help celebrate 75 years of legal gambling here are some facts you need to know:

  • An acre of land in the Valley will set you back $161,000
  • An acre of land on the Strip will set you back $11million
