Baseball Betting Scandal Hits Taiwan
Filed in archive Betting on July 28, 2005

Taiwan is once again going through a baseball betting scandal as police are looking into game fixing allegations in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL), detaining 10 suspects including a coach, player and bookmakers
Prosecutors said they had evidence that the La New Bears second-string catcher, Chen Chao-Yin, and a former translator for the Sinon Bulls, Cheng You-wei, were "stringing" for the underground gambling syndicates with some baseball players to throw games for payouts of between NT$200,000 to NT$600,000 per contest.
At least 2 teams are implicated. However league officials are going through a spate of damage control, claiming that barring a few individuals, the sport - the only professional sport in Taiwan and seen as their number one game - is largely well-managed and professional. However, a number of illegal gambling syndicates have thrived in recent years
