How Multi Denominational Slot Machines Payoff

Everything in life gets more complicated as time goes on; but sometimes that's a good thing.
For many years slot machines remained quite simple. You stuck a coin in, pulled the handle, and stood back and watched the 3 spinning reels
, hoping that all three would end up with the same fruits on the center line. Most of the time they didn't, but with decent frequency the "2 cherries" would line up and pay out an even amount, and every now and then the oranges and other varieties would "hit".
The day of the "coin in" slot machine is just about at an end, and in fact it is over in many casinos in and outside of Las Vegas.
For a while now casino operators have been installing "multi denominational" slot machines which can be played by people of any religious faith. OK, I know, I can't pass up a chance for a joke.
Anyway, these machines allow slot players to choose just how much they want to gamble, without having to traipse all over the casino floor in search of different machines.
That sounds convenient, and I suppose it is, but my skeptical mind tells me that it just a way to keep players glued to their seats.
But, are these machines paying out the same as, or better, or worse, than traditional single denomination machines?
Here's an article and some comments on the issue of payouts on multi denominational slot machines.
