Poker Playing Spreads Across US Campuses

Filed in archive Poker on March 14, 2005

Seems that college kids across the US are finding poker a great way to make a tidy sum.

Some students can spend as much as 10 hours a day playing Texas Hold'em - and often winning - treating the game and its potential profit more like a real job than a hobby

Experts say the evidence of gambling's popularity on campuses is hard to miss. In December, for example, a sorority at Columbia University conducted its first, 80-player, poker tournament with a $10 buy-in - the minimum amount required to play - while the University of North Carolina conducted its first tournament, a 175-player competition, in October. Both games filled up and had waiting lists.

And with no rules against gambling and seemingly no plans to issue any, the rise in the popularity of poker looks unlikely to stop anytime soon

"On college campuses in America, poker is a big draw - and a big concern, too"
