Six men from Hong Kong and two Malaysian women who flew into Australia a few days ago had set up in the Metro Hotel. On raiding the room, the police found $20,000, as well as computer equipment and documents.
City Central Crime Manager, Detective Chief Inspector Jon Alt, told a press conference today they had discovered an electronic ledger on one of the seized computers, and that some of the bets had come from outside Australia.
"A number of the bets were coming from overseas, so tracking down anyone who had placed bets would be a difficult task.''
He also said that the group were not the organisers behind the gambling ring.
"We believe [the ring is] based overseas, the information we received is that a small group travelled to Sydney specifically to set up and take bets over here.''
He said the information that led to the bust came from Hong Kong police and an Australian Federal Police liaison officer.
