WTO tells US to Clarify its Online Gambling Laws
Filed in archive Gambling General on August 22, 2005
It's taken Antigua to finally force the US to finally clarify its rules on offshore internet gambling, as the WTO have given them 12 months to ensure its laws don't discriminate against Caribbean-based companies in Antigua and Barbuda
The saga began in 2003 when Antigua filed a complaint to the WTO claiming they were violating International trade agreements by restricting US citizens from using online gambling sites. In the early days of online gambling, Antigua was a dominant licensee of online betting and casino operators and claimed the revenues were a large part of their economy
The WTO sided partially with Antigua - and found one specific ruling that restricted online horse betting Internationally.
The US has responded by announcing they will clear up that particular law - but state this will not soften their stance on online gambling in general- which of course is currently as grey as it could be. So thats all clear then
